Performance Enhancement Center
Stress and anxiety can negatively affect performance in sports, performing arts and the classroom (more specifically public speaking and test-taking). At the Performance Enhancement Center, staff work with students who want to increase their confidence, focus and motivation and decrease their anxiety, so that they can perform at their optimal level. The Performance Enhancement Center is a self-paced learning environment designed to help students explore various skill building resources to decrease anxiety and improve performance. The center has a massage chair so that students can relax and de-stress. The Performance Enhancement Center features state of the art EmWave© biofeedback equipment that trains students to slow down their breathing and be more relaxed while performing. The Performance Enhancement Center offers audio and video equipment, so students can record themselves practicing public speaking and then review the material to see areas where they could improve. By having an opportunity to practice performing, students decrease stress and anxiety, making the process feel more natural.
The Performance Enhancement Center currently contains information and guided exercises on:
- Fear of public speaking
- Goal setting
- Guided imagery
- Mental toughness
- Muscle relaxation
- Performance anxiety
- Positive thinking and self-talk
- Relaxation breathing exercises
- Relaxation imagery and relaxation music
- Stress and time management
- Test-taking anxiety
Students who are interested in the Performance Enhancement Center will receive three individual consultations with one of the staff to assess their needs and design a program specific to them. Next, the student will receive instruction on how to use the Performance Enhancement Center equipment and resources. Following these consultations, students can then sign up to use the Performance Enhancement Center on their own at their convenience (with a student ID).
